Don't Buy From the HoneyBaked Ham Company

Can't Possibly Be True

In April, Richard Huether, the manager of the HoneyBaked Ham outlet in Cary, N.C., was shot in the stomach during a robbery of the store and hospitalized, with medical bills paid through worker compensation and his employee health benefits. In September, when his worker compensation expired (and though still at least three months away from returning to work), HoneyBaked fired him (forcing him to begin paying 100 percent of his insurance premiums and making subsequent insurance prohibitively expensive because of his new "pre-existing condition"). However, HoneyBaked human resources executive Maggie DeCan told WRAL-TV that the firing was for Huether's own good, in that it would clear the way for him to receive Social Security disability payments. Said DeCan, "We couldn't feel any worse for Rich, and we would do anything we could for him (except keep him on the payroll)." [WRAL-TV, 9-26-09]

Who in the hell robs a place that sells hams? I understand that people need to eat and feed their families, but this is just absurd! My thoughts and prayers go out to Richard. I hope that the company recognizes their error and compensates him accordingly. To be fired "for your own good" is just another way of saying "we don't want to pay for your insurance anymore". Corporate America sucks.

i remember a starbucks incident in my hometown of masset bc.

we have a little restaurant called "haidabucks" here. it is run by 3 brothers. now u have to understand that us haidas often refer to males of our band as "bucks". so it was called haidabucks for no reason involving starbucks. also this restaurant is a normal sitdown restaurant, not a coffee shoppe.

but nevertheless starbucks sued haidabucks. this was inane for other reasons anyway since there are no starbucks anywhere on our islands (haida gwaii...or queen charlottes to some). the nearest starbucks requires a ferry trip to prince rupert.

the ensuing stink involved with this lawsuit nearly put starbucks out of business in british columbia since they had the entire first nations population against them.

a prime example of corporate greed and stupidity shooting themselves in the foot once again.

another example is the music industry, but we will save that discussion for another day.
