I love the original 1970 documentary and I liked this movie alot. The trailer is wonderful and moving: BEST LINE: "Everybody looks and thinks and feels differently as the years go by" -- Edith Bouvier Beale

ACTUALLY IT'S WONDERFUL

GREY GARDENS is based on an acclaimed documentary of the same name made in the 1970's . It centered on the aunt and cousin of Jackie Onassis and how they basically lived in squalor in upper East Hampton. The documentary filmmakers had planned to do a film on Jackie and was setting up interviews with all her relatives. When they met Big Edie (the mother) and little Edie (the daughter), they scraped the documentary on famous Jackie O and made the whole film about her relatives. That's how interesting they found them to be.

The original documentary GREY GARDENS is said to have been the film that launched shows like THE REAL WORLD and reality TV. It was the first film of it's kind where the filmmakers came into the home and spent several months just documenting and photographing Big Edie and Little Edie in their day to day lives. The documentary is positively hypnotic. It's like watching a train wreck. You can't look away.

This HBO movie based on their lives in nominated for over 10 Emmy awards. The film is very moving. It's a human interest story about two very real people. Not every movie has to have CGI explosions and gunfights in it ya know (eyes rolling).
