Letterman's Confession

You know what bothered me the most about this story? It wasn’t the adulterous ways of a late night T.V icon. Nor was it the criminal act of attempted black mail. It was the reported court documents that show Halderman (The would be extortionist) owes an ex-wife of his $6,800 a month in child and spousal support, and of course authorities have said he is deep in debt.

I don’t know about you but almost seven grand a month is allot of money in my book. And how exactly did this women earn this money? For being his wife? For bearing his child? What happened to love being free. Or is it that love is free but divorce can get expensive? Do you know why Divorce is so expensive? Because it’s worth it. The ultimate criminal in this type of what should be a crime is Kevin Federline. I would cringe at the amount of money he makes a month just for having been married to a pop princess for 2 years. From one side you can call him a pretty smart kid. From the other side you can call him a leach. I just call him a bum.

How exactly does someone earn spousal support? The answer is simple although the formulas are quite complex. First thing you do is marry someone that makes allot more money than you do. Then be a homemaker with a limited education and/or employment skills. Finally you have to prove to the court that no matter what you do, given your best efforts, even if you try your hardest then there will always be a significant disparity in incomes.

Now I’ve never been married. Nor do I even consider myself good at holding onto long term relationships anymore. You shouldn’t have to pay for someone to love you nor should you have to pay for someone to hate you. If a marriage fails then a marriage fails, pick yourself up and move on. Resist the temptation to tax your ex for having been with you. One might consider the notion that no one should be financially penalized by the marriage or it’s breakdown.

Back to Letterman’s accused..

What this guy should have done is gone ahead and wrote the book or screen play or both?... and then offer Letterman the opportunity to purchase the rights to the content. Meaning, if he bought the rights to the work and he didn’t want it to see the light of day it wouldn’t. However, he could have purchased the rights to the work and then published them. This guy could have made allot more money by offering Letterman the publishing rights then by black mail and without the jail time. After all, if Letterman didn’t buy the rights someone else woud, and he still would of made allot of money.
