It was a great night at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood when the American Cinematheque ran a rare and beautiful print of LOST HORIZON.   Let's hope Sony gets it's ass in gear and puts out the long and eagerly waited Special Edition DVD.

COME TO SHANGRI-LA!
written by Clifford Scott Carson , September 04, 2009

If my "fixation" on LOST HORIZON scares you, then be afraid, BE VERY AFRAID, because it's not something I'm going to give up. It's also a fixation that has been going on in various degrees off and on since I was a kid. There are years that go by that I don't really give it much attention and then I find myself coming back around to it and rediscovering it. When I was 14 years old I filmed the entire film off cable television with a Super 8 camera. Do you know how many reels that took? Each Super 8 cartridge is 3 minutes and 20 seconds. LOST HORIZON was 143 minutes. You do the math.

What can I say? Some people have religion that comfort them. I have movies and LOST HORIZON is a definite comfort film just like THE WIZARD OF OZ or OLIVER! are.

Certain films are soothing and even healing to me. When the world becomes a lonelier place, they help me find that "center" inside. Some people go to church. I pop in a movie. But know one thing. I don't go to conventions. I don't belong to any groups. I'm a loner in life and I choose my friends carefully. I've never been much of a joiner, not that doesn't mean I'm not a good team player, I am.

Also for the record, I CAN'T STAND Star Wars or Star Trek. BARBARELLA is my favorite sc-fi film.

LOST HORIZON has never been released on VHS or DVD. It's a film that deserves to be rediscovered and attention paid to it.

Oh, one more thing, it's not a fixation. It's an OBSESSION and I believe a healthy one. Brings me joy.

Thats cool...everyone needs something to stay grounded
written by Luke Guidry III , September 04, 2009

Mine is and was The lord of the rings, The Elric Saga by Micheal Moorcock, The Drizzt series by R.A. Salvatore, and The Lion, The Witch , and The Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis. I loved to read as a kid and it's something I wish I had more money for these days. I always found it enjoyable to get lost in a book. Movies are more my speed these days.

I also get lost in comics, I like Silver Surfer, The Punisher, X-Men, Iron Man, Batman, etc.. I have managed to hold onto my collection from 91' on. They are with my girlfriend in NY right now, and believe it or not she refuses to let me sell them though I have offered because of our financial situation. GOD I love her.

My newest love is texas hold 'em. I have many online poker sites that I play at and am a member of pokerspace ( online poker forum). I've managed to build bankrolls up to $360 starting from scratch (playing freerolls and not depositing) though I have deposited twice in my short career totaling $85. Unfortunately its illegal for banks to transfer funds from online gambling sites so I couldn't cash out any of my winnings. Barney frank has a bill scheduled for a vote in sep. to repeal the unjust UIGEA. This is my OBSSESSION. Someday I hope to be good enough to play professionally.

PITY FOR JOHN DOE
written by Clifford Scott Carson , September 04, 2009

For some reason when I answered the "fixation" response I thought it was Luke who wrote it ?? I didn't even bother to look at the poster until now.

Now that I know it is John Doe, I have a different response. You see, John Doe would never believe it, but I'm sorry for him. Sorry that he's never known the kind of joy that something like LOST HORIZON has brought to me. Why else would he so disturbed? Frankly, I don't think creativity was encouraged much in his household growing up, so that "type" of artistic sense is frightens him, because it's something he doesn't understand. Yes, sad, but true. FEAR NO ART was a popular slogan a decade ago.

I'm glad that I have things like LOST HORIZON, OLIVER!, HOUSE OF DARK SHADOWS and a host of other films that bring me joy and happiness in life.

Clearly John Doe has never had anything that he's really treasured in his life. He's never had anything that meant something to him for a very long period of time. Something that wasn't easily disposable to him. No, I don't even expect John Doe to know what I'm talking about. But it's at least to his credit that he understands the strength of classics and sentiment, because it's beauty is something he'll never know.

Lost Horizon huh?!
written by Luke Guidry III , September 04, 2009

If I ever come across it, I'll have to check that out. Dont get out to the theatre much though. I cant really piss on something I've never seen. Need to take it in before I pass judgement, perhaps Doe boy should do the same. I really want to see some shakespeare live. Hamlet would be my first choice. I liked Kenneth branagh's version more than Gibson's. Never had a chance to see it live, didn't want to go by myself and couldn't find anyone to drag along.

MORGAN had the chance to meet the ULTIMATE PRINCESS IN PARADISE
written by Clifford Scott Carson , September 05, 2009

LOST HORIZON is based on a famous novel by James Hilton (Goodbye Mr. Chips) and first made into a film by Frank Capra in 1937. In 1973 producer Ross Hunter made it into a large scale musical for Columbia pictures with music by BURT BACHARACH. While escaping war-torn China, a group of Europeans crash in the Himalayas, where they are rescued and taken to the mysterious Valley of the Blue Moon, Shangri-La. Hidden from the rest of the world, Shangri-La is a haven of peace and tranquility for world-weary diplomat Richard Conway. His ambitious brother, George, sees it as a prison from which he must escape, even if it means risking his life and bringing destruction to the ancient culture of Shangri-La.

Igmar Bergman great LIV ULLMANN plays Catherine, the ultimate princess in Paradise. Morgan actually had the opportunity to meet her when he was in Sarasota. I had lunch with her.

It's a BURT BACHARACH Shangri-La.
written by Clifford Scott Carson , September 06, 2009

You have to remember Luke, this version of LOST HORIZON is a musical fantasy. An anti war anti capitalism musical fantasy. With music by BURT BACHARACH and lyrics by HAL DAVID. If you don't like Bacharach, you probably won't like LOST HORIZON. It's a lavish expensive film that was heavily criticized by critics in America. However, it was a big hit overseas.

It stars PETER FINCH, LIV ULLMANN, SALLY KELLERMAN, GEORGE KENNEDY, OLIVIA HUSSEY, MICHAEL YORK, BOBBY VAN, JOHN GIELGUD and CHARLES BOYER
