DAVID LETTERMAN style of INTERVIEWING

Why David Letterman is still on the air astounds me? He's awful at interviewing people. Nothing is ever talked about seriously, everything is kept at it's utmost superficial. The focus rarely stays on the guest for too long without Letterman turning the attention back to HIM and what HE would do under the circumstances that are being discussed. Everything has to be about HIM or and has to come BACK to him and how he feels about it. The interviews are as much about Letterman as they are the person he's interviewing. Never does he want to even broach a topic with meaning, let alone stay on a topic of sincere interest or curiosity. His questions are kept at an all time dumb. The show is basically about the celebrity sitting there watching him do his routine while they watch and occasionally comment on HIS feelings about it. Letterman doesn't even listen very well. He doesn't hook onto what the guest is saying that might lead to something interesting or thought provoking. He's listening for what the guest is saying that he can trip them up later in the conversation and get a laugh from it. All to make him look quick and funny.

Jane Fonda was on last night. Who gives a better interview than Jane Fonda? Yet the topic stayed on Letterman and whether he fly fishes or not and the time that he did, what happened to him. WHO CARES?

It would seem that David Letterman doesn't know the slightest thing about asking an interesting guest interesting questions. It's a really dumbed down show and annoying to fall asleep to. It would be nice to see an interview where the questions actually lead to something that occasionally stimulates the intellect a bit and isn't about some ridiculous mundane activity that occurred during the day.

Why do you think Obama chose Leno?

It was a really great interview. And for anyone that did not catch Obama on The Colbert Report the other night, all I have to say is hulu.com..

not all that interested.

Actually Letterman is an okay guy, but I don't think he's all that interested in most of the people he interviews and it shows.
